GusColors Supports Cause

GusColors is auctioning off a painting for a good cause.

It is said that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.  In the case of many women battling breast cancer, it is so true.  Empowerment, strength and confidence emerge in a much  more tenacious way.

In support of the women who have won, or sadly lost, their fight against breast cancer, and other cancer survivors as well; and to those family members and their friends, as well as the research and education that is also a part of the fight, GusColors will start the bid at $300 for his original painting, Jaded, the story of a fight and the peace after the battle.

For more information, please message char@guscolors.com.

Bids start at $300 with proceeds to benefit cancer survivors, their families & friends, and research and education.

GusColors goes to Switzerland?!

Art Fusion Galleries has presented many great opportunities for GusColors.  Such as one for GusColors to find a way to Switzerland!  Yes, Switzerland.  GusColors is making a trip across the world!

Actually, your favorite emerging artist himself will not be traveling to Switzerland, but a GusColors original will be.  Leon, a painting inspired by the story of a young boy who beat the odds and survived death, will now be a part of a private collection.

Email splash@guscolors.com for more information.

Artist vs. Brand

Since the beginning of this month, I've picked up two magazines with Romero Britto "gracing" the front, but then again, what hasn't he touched here in Miami? Just like the articles in both Poder magazine and the Miami New Times, Romero Britto can be found anywhere you look in Miami. And both articles posed the question of whether or not Britto is an artist or a brand.

Personally, I have never been a Britto fan. In fact, I had no idea who this Britto guy was before I moved to Miami. So, what's the big deal? Why has his happy go-lucky work spread like a virus and vommed it's way onto suitcases, collectibles and even custom paint for high-end luxury sports cars. I don't get it.

Britto has made it evident that he doesn't even do his own painting anymore. There's a "Diamond Dust" room in his unmarked warehouse in the Miami Wynwood Distrct, in which an elderly man applies carefully that familiar red glitter. And according to the other article, the only painting he does is picking out what color goes where, applies it with a brush in one small stroke, and his assistants to the rest. Is that how art is done these days?

I'll give him credit for his "rags to riches" story. In some way, it's admirable, but from that small beginning, a disgusting mess of colors has exploded over the Miami-Dade canvas. So, what does it take to turn an artist into a brand? And when will this Britto overload finally end?

Many people compare GusColors work to the "work" of Romero Britto, but in reality, there's no comparison. Sure, both Gus and Britto use bright colors and whimsical characters. And they both fall into the pop art genre. But I know one thing for sure, that GusColors enjoys what he does from an on-hand perspective. Not only that, but GusColors represents life in a more factual way. In the New Times article, it states, "Britto paints only happy subjects: smiling kittens, dancing clowns, and polka-dot palm trees. 'There's enough stress and ugliness in the world, why would I want to create more?'" GusColors on the other hand accepts the good with the evil, questions the peril of his characters, and actually spends hours on end at a single masterpiece.

Perhaps I am being biased, but I'm not the only one who thinks Britto is on overkill. His consumption of Miami doesn't allow other emerging artists a chance to get the exposure they deserve. Not that I ever wish bad things on people, I just hope that the next time Britto jumps behind the wheel of his Bentley after a few drinks at The Forge, that he runs into one of his familiar Miami landmarks.

Last Night's FAME

Who would have thought that Doral, Florida would be the home to some of Miami's hottest emerging talent in fashion, art, music and entertainment? Held at the Doral Park Country Club, was FAME, hosted by SITV's Latina star, Sasha Cabrera. There was live entertainment on the main stage from the all-girl rock band, The New, as well as beats by DJ Crutch. The highlight of the night was duo Jeannine Prats and Ketty Hernandez, introducing their line Trouble X2. Artwork was displayed by yours truly, GusColors, in addition to Joel Blanco, Autumn Ariana, Ivan Galindo and a live painting by Floyd the Rock Artist.

The event received a lot of press, including the Miami New Times and a representative of the Miami Herald was in attendance. From last night's outcome and the number of people there is proof that these emerging artist's will have more than just last night to get their names out there.

Iris Vera, coordinator of the show, was beyond pleased by the work done in preparation of the event, also the work done by the staff of DPCC, the vendors and all participants. In speaking with Iris, who is an artist herself, she knows some of the financial struggles of young, emerging artists. She wanted FAME to be an affordable option for everyone to enjoy. "Some shows charge outrageous prices for participants, and I hate covers," she had said. Her vision of the show was to get names out there and wanted everyone who was there to enjoy the night. I must say, her mission was accomplished.

FAME was a great event to start the summer for GusColors. He is finishing up a new painting and is preparing for his 3-month exhibition at Miami Design District's Art Fusion Gallery, which represents over 700 artists worldwide. The exhibition, Transluminescent Fantasies, begins July 1st.

On behalf of GusColors, as well as last night's artists, thank you for your support of the arts.

The Results of Dreaming in Paint

Char has been responsible for most of these blogs. She's the writer, not me, but I wanted to try out this blogging thing, so here goes! --Gus

Wow. The past month has been amazing for me. I'm excited to see what unveils from the awesome things that are heading my way. If you hadn't heard, I was accepted by the Art Fusion Gallery in the Design District of Miami. A big thanks to William Braemer and the jury for an amazing opportunity. I can't wait to get my name and my art out there. There are details to come regarding a summer exhibition starting this July.

On June 4th I am going to participate in an event in Doral called FAME. I join other up and coming artists in fashion, music, and visual arts for Miami exposure. Visit the Facebook fan page for the invite and more information.

GusColors.com got a much needed makeover. Ricky Pierson, a friend from high school in Nicaragua and the man behind the new GusColors website, did such an amazing job. I am getting great feedback.

Most of all, I want to thank my family and close friends for all of their support. With them, I'm encouraged to go beyond the horizon and explore my passion. To Char, my Maganda Princesa: you have been so amazing and supporting. Your positivity and your love for me and my work, drives me. I'd honestly be lost without you. To my Mom: Gracias viejita por todo su carino y apoyo. And to my friends, we'll celebrate later!

I have been truly blessed! I have a feeling that 2010 will be the year.

Wouldn't You Agree?

I don't know about you, but I'm amazed at the progression of GusColors' art. For the past couple of years, I've had the opportunity to work closely with Gus, and I'm continually amazed at how his mind works, and how he translates all that brain activity into a masterpiece.

While enjoying the rhythmic sounds of the rainstorm outside and my breakfast, I was admiring the latest project by GusColors. I found myself lost in the story he is trying to tell and asked myself "What happens next?" His works are exciting stories on canvas; they are tales of love, heartbreak, struggle, freedom, dreams and curiosity. His characters form a life of their own and come to life in an unexpected way. To tell you the truth, I don't have the words to describe the sensation, but if you're an art lover, it's one you may understand.

Wouldn't you agree?
